After a successful 2026 World Cup, there is a lot of controversy over Gianni Infantino's decisions. Everything revolves around the idea of opening the doors to private investment through the creation of the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE). Luis Figo asks for Infantino's departure.
The idea of selling part of the commercial rights to private investors has not been widely accepted in the world of football. Despite the large financial benefits promised by FIFA, the reception has not been positive.
Among the most notable rejections is that of UEFA. With its 55 associations, this confederation was flatly opposed to the ideas of Gianni Infantino. In addition to the federal entities, European football legends have also expressed their rejection. The most forceful of all was Luis Figo.
"Today I join others from across our game and call on Gianni Infantino to resign as president of FIFA. Infantino has disowned the office he promised to elevate. He has lied, cheated and tried to feather his own nest at the expense of the game he is supposed to serve," Figo wrote on his social media.
"He has lost the support of his senior staff, his closest advisors, the vast majority of people who dedicate their lives to this sport and even, it seems, the winner of the FIFA Peace Prize. It is too late to save his dignity, but it is not too late to save football. He should go. Now," he concluded.
When does Gianni Infantino's term end?
On March 16, 2023, the last elections were held to determine the president of FIFA. At a congress held in Kigali, Rwanda, Gianni Infantino was re-elected after being the only candidate nominated.
Gianni Infantino's current term would officially end on March 18, 2027. On this date, new presidential elections will be held in Rabat, Morocco. Infantino has already expressed his idea of running again.
