Panama: they open investigation due to allegation of alleged rigging in full soccer match
The goalkeeper of Sporting San Miguelito, José Calderón, made a error that led to an own-goal and the controversy
A match closure in the Panamanian Football League set off alarms and activated internal protocols. The organization confirmed the opening of an investigation office after what happened in the duel between Alianza FC and Sporting San Miguelito, corresponding to the last day of the first phase of the Clausura 2026 tournament.

The decision occurs in the amid of questions for a specific action in the 90th minute. In that play, Sporting's goalkeeper, José Calderón , made a error that led to an own goal, a result that sealed the 3-2 win for Alianza and generated suspicions both on and off the field.
From the LPF it was communicated that the case will be addressed with institutional mechanisms. The entity indicated that it requested its Integrity Unit “to cite the parties involved to clarify what happened”, in addition to activate internal procedures that include the formation of a joint taskforce.
The body also made clear its stance on this type of situations. “While in football errors of the game may occur, there are situations that exceed that margin and are unacceptable within the standards of professional competition,” he noted.
Formal complaints and recent background
The case was not only in the hands of the league. Sporting San Miguelito made public a statement in which they expressed their “deep concern” ” due to what happened during the match. The club considers that there are indications that could be related to possible irregularities.
The institution confirmed that it presented formal complaints both to the LPF and to the Panamanian Football Federation, requesting investigation igations “immediate, exhaustive and impartial”. He/she/it/also expressed his/her rejection to any conduct that affects the integrity of sport.
In its statement, Sporting requested that, if irregularities are found, firm sanctions be applied. In addition, it made a call to the Panamanian football clubs and authorities to reinforce transparency and controls within the competition.
The LPF advanced that, once the process is concluded, it will send a communication to the Disciplinary Commission of the Federation for “to”evaluate possible sanctions”. The body assured that it will take the case “to its last consequences” and that it will act with the maximum rigority.
This episode adds to recent background in the country. In 2023, a coach publicly denounced the match-fixing after a controversial end. A year later In 2024, arrests of two players and one former player linked to results manipulation networks were recorded, including payments to alter matches.
