Sergio Canales reveals details of his departure from Liga MX
The Spanish midfielder will leave Rayados de Monterrey. Sergio Canales left good returns in Mexico, but decided to leave
The arrival of renowned footballers to Liga MX is becoming more and more common. Rayados de Monterrey accustomed its fans to hirings such as Olíver Torres, Anthony Martial, Sergio Canales, among others. Canales was one of those who did best in the royal team. But the Spanish midfielder did not feel comfortable at this stage.
Sergio Canales came to Liga MX from Real Betis in Spain. The 35-year-old veteran midfielder closes his time in Mexican soccer after a complex season on a collective level. Canales considers that his cycle in Monterrey is over.
"In life everything is cycles, everything is stages, it happened to me at Betis, and the truth is I wanted to retire. I want to be very clear about where I am, where I can contribute and in this stage with Rayados I considered that I was not achieving it. It was my fault, for whatever reason and I considered that it was the best for the club on the one hand and for me in the end," Canales said in an interview with Mauricio Ponce.
Rayados de Monterrey had one of the most expensive squads in all of Mexican and Concacaf football. However, the Regio team could not qualify for the Liguilla. Monterrey said goodbye to the tournament with 5 victories in 17 days.
Sergio Canales leaves Monterrey
In July 2023 Sergio Canales signed with Rayados de Monterrey. The veteran Spanish midfielder arrived in Liga MX with a great poster behind him. Canales recognized that Mexican football has different characteristics and he had to adapt his game to the needs of the club.
"Individually, yes, I have enjoyed a lot and learned a lot; I come from a very different football, which is very associative; if you are not clear, play easy. I came with national team football, which was one-touch, and I came to a football in which the team needed me, to be more vertical, to shoot more, make individual plays and score more goals, but I was able to adapt and it made me a much better player," he explained.
Sergio Canales played up to 118 games with the royal team's shirt. In Monterrey, more verticality and a greater offensive contribution were required. The Spaniard scored 26 goals and 22 assists in just over 9,200 minutes on the field.
Reports have linked Sergio Canales to Racing de Santander. This was the club in which Canales completed his training categories and where he was for a season before leaving for Real Madrid. At 35 years old, Canales' career could end right where it began in 2009.
