US soccer has gained greater relevance in recent years. Major League Soccer has focused on strengthening its clubs with big-name signings from abroad. The arrival of Lionel Messi gave much more visibility to their tournament, and they reportedly aim to bring it in line with South American soccer. Since Lionel Messi joined Inter Miami, there has been talk of MLS clubs competing again in the Copa Libertadores. This is a step that has been demanded of Mexican soccer for several years. In the United States, they are reportedly expediting several processes to compete in South American soccer. "MLS has already adjusted its schedule like all leagues around the world. The problem is that they are doing it to 'mess with' Mexican teams because they have already confirmed that there is a Leagues Cup for life, and they are going to make even more changes. They are going to add matches between Mexico and the United States," stated the 'Raza Deportiva' podcast on ESPN. The same report adds the possibility of the United States being included regularly in the Copa America. American soccer officials have reportedly anticipated the demands of Mexican soccer analysts.

“Watch out for this, the United States will go to the Copa Libertadores before Mexico returns. They will go to the Copa America before Mexico returns. That's how treacherous they've been,” the report adds.

MLS Change

One of the first major steps for American soccer is to align its schedule with European leagues. The 2027-2028 season would begin in late June or early August. The American tournament would end in May 2028.

This adaptation of the tournament includes a winter break from December to mid-February. This break mirrors that of European tournaments, although not as abrupt as Russia's.
