Toluca hands Chivas their second consecutive defeat 2-0 and snatches the overall lead
A mistake by Richard Ledezma sealed Chivas' fate, resulting in their second defeat of the Clausura 2026 and costing them their Liga MX lead
Chivas of Guadalajara never imagined that a mistake in the first three minutes by Mexican-American Richard Ledezma could be so costly, ultimately opening the door to their downfall and costing them the Second consecutive defeat, now against Toluca 2-0.
Unfortunately, Ledezma's miss sealed the fate of the "Sacred Flock," who arrived at the Nemesio Diez stadium hoping to prove that last week's 2-1 loss to Cruz Azul was just a fluke.
But Ledezma's mistake allowed Jesus Gallardo to convert the penalty awarded after the defender fouled the Portuguese player Paulinho, putting them down 1-0. Nine minutes later, Jorge Diaz made it 2-0, allowing the "Red Devils" to cruise through the rest of the match.
In this way, Chivas temporarily relinquished the overall lead to their conquerors, depending on what Cruz Azul did against Monterrey. The serious issue is that the Guadalajara team's style of play wasn't enough to change the fate of Gabriel Milito's squad.
It's true that these two defeats seem like a serious setback for Guadalajara and It's said that when they started facing bigger teams, their power seemed to wane, but the reality is that the red-and-white team played well enough to deserve better, but even then, fate wasn't on their side when two goals by Armando "Hormiga" Gonzalez were disallowed for offside. The difference in the result was that Toluca was clinical, while Chivas perhaps lacked the final touch, in addition to the great performance of the Red Devils' goalkeeper, Luis Garcia, who practically denied the Guadalajara side two goals. The disallowed goals by "Hormiga" Gonzalez came during the Guadalajara team's comeback in the 22nd minute from a Luis Romo cross, and then in the 32nd minute from another good play by Bryan Gonzalez, who set up the striker to finish, but he was offside.
Unsuccessful Reaction
For the second half, Chivas went all out with the introduction of Brian Rodriguez, Hugo Camberos, Angel Sepulveda, Santiago Sandoval, and Ricardo Marin, who had the Red Devils on the ropes. However, the performance of their goalkeeper ensured the victory for Antonio Mohamed's team, keeping them undefeated alongside Pumas UNAM.
Now Chivas will have to reorganize and accept that these two setbacks were simply the result of their shortcomings or the overconfidence that came with being league leaders. They need to return to their roots and continue growing with the great squad they have, which should allow them to achieve better results.
