UAB player arrested for stabbing 2 teammates before game
The 20-year-old University of Alabama at Birmingham player allegedly attacked his teammates hours before a game
Offensive lineman Daniel Mincey, 20, of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), was arrested and charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault after allegedly stabbing two teammates hours before a home game.
According to Jefferson County court documents, Mincey used a knife to attack to players Joshua Underwood and JaSire Peterson, both defensive linemen for the team.
The attack occurred Saturday morning in the Football Operations Building, located on the UAB campus, just hours before the game against South Florida.
Authorities have not revealed what motivated the attack, and available documents do not detail the origin of the altercation.
Mincey, a 6-foot-4 redshirt freshman offensive guard from Pompano Beach, Florida, came to UAB after a stint at the University of Kentucky.
UAB Victims Out of Danger
Interim head coach Alex Mortensen reported that Underwood and Peterson were released from the hospital and continue to recover.
“They appreciate everyone’s prayers and support,” said Mortensen, who declined to provide details of the incident due to the ongoing investigation.
The director UAB athletic director Mark Ingram called the day of the attack “very sad for UAB football and the entire athletic department.” Mortensen noted that the program's priority is the well-being of the players and that all team members will have access to counseling services during the week. He also said that any player who needs to temporarily step away from practice will be allowed to do so. Despite the emotional impact, the team decided to play its final home game, which honored the graduating seniors. However, several members of the roster chose not to participate. UAB lost 48-18 to South Florida, leaving them with a 3-8 record (1-6 in the American Conference). Their final game of the season will be on November 29 against Tulsa.
