World Series Champion with Dodgers to Join USA Team in World Baseball Classic
Schwarber, Henderson, Turang and Smith strengthen a roster aiming to reclaim the crown in 2026
The USA team continues to strengthen a lineup that was already one of the most powerful in international baseball. Ahead of the 2026 World Baseball Classic, the roster has added several high-caliber players: Kyle Schwarber, Brice Turang, Gunnar Henderson, and Will Smith. Each arrives to strengthen different areas of the team managed by Mark DeRosa, which is looking to reclaim the title they haven't won since 2017. The announcements on Tuesday add to a previous list of players already committed to the national team, which includes names with enormous media and sporting weight: Aaron Judge, Corbin Carroll, Pete Crow-Armstrong, Bobby Witt Jr., Cal Raleigh, and Paul Skenes. Judge, the current winner of his third American League MVP award, will also be the captain of the US team. Elite reinforcements for a team determined to fight for the title. The United States will return to the tournament with the memory still fresh of the painful final loss in 2023 against Japan. That edition was marked by the duel between Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout, a duel that ended with the decisive strikeout that sealed the crown for Japan. Since then, the interest of American players in competing in the event has grown, and the team seems more determined than ever to reclaim its prominence. The US team will debut on March 6 against Brazil at Daikin Park in Houston, in Group B. Meanwhile, DeRosa and general manager Mike Hill continue to finalize the 30-man roster. Among the new additions, Kyle Schwarber brings proven power to the plate and experience in high-pressure situations. Although his stats from last season were not detailed, his role as designated hitter will be an important piece in the offensive heart of the lineup. Brice Turang, 26, from the Brewers, is experiencing one of the strongest stretches of his career. The 2024 Gold Glove winner finished 2025 with a .288/.359/.435 slash line.18 home runs and 28 doubles. His defense at second base adds balance to an already deep roster. Gunnar Henderson, a star for the Orioles, missed the 2023 World Series due to a lack of Major League experience, but his rise was meteoric: he won the American League Rookie of the Year award and finished fourth in the MVP voting in 2024. In 2025,he maintained his level with a .787 OPS, 17 home runs, 34 doubles, and 30 stolen bases. His presence gives the United States another top-tier option at shortstop alongside Witt Jr. Meanwhile, catcher Will Smith arrives as the reigning World Series champion with the Dodgers, remembered for his game-winning home run in the 11th inning of Game 7. At 30 years old, he posted a .296/.404/.497 slash line with 17 home runs and 20 doubles. His .834 OPS since 2019 is the best among MLB catchers with at least 2,000 at-bats. He will share catching duties with Cal Raleigh, the American League MVP runner-up.
