Tech giant Oracle will receive a copy of the algorithm that powers TikTok to operate for US users, according to a senior official in President Donald Trump's administration agreement on Monday.

According to ABC News, determining the next steps for the algorithm, currently owned by Beijing-based ByteDance, has been one of the most closely watched topics during negotiations over TikTok's future.

An anonymous Trump administration official said they believe the plan will satisfy national security concerns if TikTok divests itself of its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. President Joe Biden signed bipartisan legislation before leaving office requiring the Chinese company to sell its assets to a US company or face a ban.

US officials have previously warned that the algorithm that powers what users see on the app is vulnerable to manipulation by Chinese authorities, who can use it to shape content on the platform in ways that are difficult to detect.

“There would be no regulatory compliance if the algorithm were Chinese. No algorithm can be shared with ByteDance,” a spokesman for the House Select Committee on China said.

The White House over the weekend outlined the key aspects of a deal that would see TikTok become US-controlled in a long-awaited agreement with China.

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said the deal could be signed “in the coming days,” though Beijing has yet to comment.

The US has sought to seize ByteDance's operations. the video-sharing app to its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, citing national security reasons.

TikTok had previously been told it must sell its US operations or risk being shut down.

However, US President Donald Trump has delayed the ban's implementation four times since his initial announcement in January, and earlier this week extended the deadline again until December.
