A rare accident occurred early Monday morning on Interstate 70 in Washington County, Maryland, when a wind turbine blade being transported by a detached truck and ended up hitting oncoming traffic.

According to the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA), the incident occurred around 5:30 am A tractor-trailer traveling west on I-70 struck the guardrail, causing the wind turbine's massive blade to partially see into the eastbound lanes. At that moment, another oncoming tractor-trailer clipped the blade, complicating matters.

Images captured by a Maryland Department of Transportation camera showed the massive wind turbine component blocking several lanes, forcing the complete closure of westbound I-70 at I-81 and reducing eastbound traffic to just two lanes.

Heavy towing equipment worked to return the tractor-trailer to the proper lanes, cutting through part of the guardrail to maneuver the truck, which was eventually safely parked on the shoulder just west of Maryland Route 63.

Despite the spectacular accident, only one person was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, FOX 5 DC reported.

All lanes were reopened around 8:30 am, restoring normal traffic after several hours of intense traffic.
