Juan Manuel Marquez gave his opinion on the arrest of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in Mexico and commented that now everything is in the hands of the lawyers so they can prove his innocence and thus clear his image.
On the ProBox TV channel, Marquez said that the current situation for Chavez Jr. is sad and he hopes that details about what will happen to the Mexican will be released soon.
“Now we have to see, the lawyers have to fully immerse themselves in studying and analyzing this entire situation and defending Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. I believe that he needs to have the best lawyers here, he needs to prove the things they are going to ask of him, and in some way he has to do it to clean up his image, to clean up what is currently resonating and making noise in the boxing world,” he said.
“I think that for now we leave the work to the lawyers, let them do their job and in that sense we will see what happens to Chavez Jr. if he is released, if he is freed, or what is next for him,” he added.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is being held preventively in a maximum security prison in Sonora, and his legal status will be determined this Saturday.
Chavez Jr. was detained by ICE on July 2 in Los Angeles for having an irregular immigration status, since his B2 tourist visa expired in 2024. The Mexican filed an application to obtain permanent residency in the United States after marrying Frida Munoz, a US citizen who according to authorities is linked to the Sinaloa Cartel because she was in a relationship with the deceased son of Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman.
Shortly after, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that Chavez Jr. had an arrest warrant since March 2023 issued by the Attorney General's Office (FGR) in Mexico for organized crime and arms trafficking. Reason why they were processing his deportation.
In his last fight, the Mexican lost to Jake Paul by unanimous decision. The boxer had had problems with addiction and with the justice system in Los Angeles for possession of a ghost gun. After entering rehabilitation and having the charges dismissed, Junior returned to the ring with a victory over Uriah Hall in 2024.
Now the son of the Mexican Grand Champion, 38 years old, -who has a professional record of 54 wins (34 by knockout), 7 losses and a draw- again faces problems with the law.
