Trump’s immigration policies are described by a cardinal as “morally repugnant’
Representatives of the Catholic Church disagree with the mass raids and detentions against immigrants
Donald Trump's second term as US president came with a large number of immigration policies, including the increase in detentions by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE).
Although these policies of the Republican president have defined his administration since he has returned to the White House, he does not have the approval of the majority of society, who reject the actions against immigrants.
According to the latest survey conducted by Pew Research, 47% of the population negatively perceives the anti-immigration offensive that the Government is carrying out, compared to 42% who approve of it.
Americans also do not approve of the end of the United States temporary immigration program (TPS). According to the results presented by the research center, 59% condemn the measure and 39% support it.
Questionable Policies
Society, human rights activists, and even members of the Catholic Church have openly criticized the arrests and raids carried out by ICE against the immigrant population regardless of location.
Cardinal Robert McElroy, a prominent leader of the Catholic Church and ally of Pope Leo XIV, has spoken out strongly against the Trump administration's immigration policies, calling the raids and attacks on immigrants "inhumane" and "morally repugnant."
In statements to CNN last Tuesday, he condemned the mass deportations of children, women, and men, which he considers an action that breaks up families, regardless of the administration of the Republican president.
"It is right to be able to control our borders. However, what is happening now goes much further "This is a massive and indiscriminate deportation of men, women, children, and families that literally tears families apart and is intended to do so," the cardinal said. McElroy was appointed to lead the US capital's archdiocese in January, the month in which Donald Trump was inaugurated. He also participated in the conclave that elected the first American pope in May.
“This is simply not only incompatible with Catholic doctrine, but it is inhumane and morally repugnant,” the Catholic Church representative declared, referring to the opening of Alligator Alcatraz, an immigration detention center surrounded by alligators and wildlife.
The cardinal noted that people are now afraid to go to church after Trump eliminated the policy that prohibited ICE officers from making arrests in sensitive areas, such as churches.
