Several people died after a devastating explosion at an explosives manufacturing plant in Tennessee on Friday.
The explosion occurred at Accurate Energetic Systems in McEwen, located about 80 kilometers west of Nashville, according to media such as ABC News.
Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis confirmed to the press that there are several victims fatalities and several people missing, although he did not specify numbers.
At least 13 people are missing, Hickman County Mayor Jim Bates told the outlet.
“We have a very thorough investigation going on,” Davis said during a news conference. “This won’t be something like a car accident or anything like that, we’ll just clean up the debris and leave. We’ll probably be here for a few days,” he added.
“We’re trying to take as much time as we need to right now. We’re prioritizing the individuals involved and their families, and trying to be very compassionate to them,” he continued.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Department of Homeland Security and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation are among the agencies that responded to the scene, Davis said.
Accurate Energetic Systems is “cooperating with us in every way they can,” he added. “They’re as interested in solving this as we are.” Accurate Energetic Systems makes explosives and energetic devices for the military, aerospace, demolition, and mining industries, according to its website. Its clients include the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security, according to the Association of the United States Army. The explosion occurred at 7:48 a.m. local time and destroyed one of the facility’s buildings, officials said.
