Trump collapses in polls and closes to Biden's worst indexes
The wear due to inflation, international conflicts and political division hits the image of the president heading to 2028
Donald Trump is going through one of the complicated moments of his political career. New polls reveal that the president records levels of disapproval even worse than those Joe Biden faced during the final crisis of his presidential campaign in 2024.
According to data published by YouGov, Trump achieved a net approval rating of -22 points, a result of 36% approval versus 58% disapproval.
Although the Republican has faced ups and downs for years, analysts highlight that this time the fall looks deeper and constant. The data more worrying for the White House is not only the number, but permanence: Trump has been more than two months without exceeding 40% approval.
David Montgomery, an analyst for YouGov, explained that before “Trump’s bad weeks were quickly offset by less negative polls”, something that is no longer happening.
“The percentage of Americans who approve of Trump's management has been below 40% for two consecutive months,” Montgomery wrote.
Inflation and political wear hit Trump
The factors behind Trump's collapse are similar to those that ended up affecting Biden during his final months as a presidential candidate.
Inflation continues to be one of the biggest headaches for millions of Americans. Although the economy avoided a severe recession, prices continue to rise and the impact is already being reflected in voters' pockets.
Recent data from the Consumer Price Index show that prices are growing again above wages, something that wasn't happening d It has been three years. To this is the increase in wholesale prices, which recorded an 6% annual rise, the largest increase in more than four years.
Specialists also point to international tensions as another key factor. While Biden was criticized by Afghanistan and the war in Gaza, Trum p now faces questions over the handling of the conflict with Iran, a situation that has even caused divisions among some conservative sectors.
In addition, age and physical wear are reintroduced in public conversation. Biden faced constant criticism for a period s of confusion and tiredness; now Trump is noted for apparent moments of fatigue during official meetings and events.
Republicans maintain support despite the crisis
Unlike what happened with Biden in the Democratic Party, a large part of the Republican Party continues to publicly support Trump despite the bad numbers.
Even Republican legislators who distanced the president in the past have faced political consequences. One of the most-mentioned cases is e l of Senator Bill Cassidy, who is under pressure after voting in favor of the impeachment against Trump after the attack on the Capitol on January 6 2021.
Meanwhile, political analysts warn that wear and tear could grow ahead of the 2028 elections if inflation continues to rise and the international situation worsens.
For now, Trump maintains political control within his party, but polls show that citizen discontent is beginning to become a problem that is increasingly difficult to ignore.
