Widespread blackout in Los Angeles left thousands without power
The Department of Electricity and Water is investigating the causes; service was gradually restored
Thousands of families in Los Angeles were left without electricity due to a blackout that began at 12:55 p.m. and ended after 4:00 p.m.
The massive power outage stretched from Santa Monica to downtown Los Angeles and affected homes and businesses in the neighborhoods of Koreatown, Mid-Wilshire, Palms, Beverly Hills, Culver City, Arlington Heights, Leimert Park, and other areas west of the city.
The Los Angeles Department of Light and Water (LADWP) is investigating the cause of the power outage affecting more than 100,000 customers across much of the city.
The LADWP reported that approximately 31,000 customers began experiencing power outages shortly before 1 p.m., eventually reaching a peak of over 100,000. Service was gradually restored until it was fully normalized.
A resident of Koreatown posted on the website X that, thankfully, power was restored to her home within half an hour.
Some expressed hope in their social media comments: “I hope the power comes back soon.”
Others joked about it: “Looks like Gavin forgot to pay the bill again.”
while another commented, “Oops, I forgot to pay the electricity bill.”
Others made frustrated comments: “Let’s embrace the new world”; “This will get worse” or “more to come.”
And there were those who took the opportunity to criticize Governor Gavin Newsom, Mayor Karen Bass, the Democratic Party, and LADWP Chief Janisse Quinonez.
“Isn’t it true that the highest-ranking person at LADWP earns $600,000?” one person said irritably on X.
The LADWP website showed dozens of areas with major power outages, each with more than 2,500 customers affected, but with repair crews assigned or already on site.
A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) revealed that after the blackout they responded to numerous rescues of people trapped in elevators.
Nationally,LADWP currently ranks first in total power outages and second in percentage of affected customers among all utility companies.
