A unique Carrera GT revives the glory of the Porsche 917

Thus was born one of the most extreme and emotional customization projects undertaken by the brand in recent years: a Porsche Carrera GT transformed to pay tribute to the mythical 917 Salzburg, the car that gave Porsche its first overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970.

Unlike other commemorative design exercises, this project did not originate as a marketing initiative or as an exhibition concept car. It was a personal commission from a client deeply connected to the brand's history, who was looking for more than just a special paint job: he wanted to capture the essence of an unrepeatable moment in motorsport and transfer it to one of the most radical supercars ever built by Porsche.
Le Mans 1970: The Origin of the Myth
To understand the magnitude of this tribute, we must go back to 1970. That year, Porsche achieved one of the most important victories in its history at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The star was the short-tail Porsche 917, identified by the number 23 and adorned with the unmistakable red and white colors of Salzburg.
At the wheel were Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood, who took the 917 to the top step of the podium in the world's most demanding endurance race.
That triumph not only marked Porsche's first outright victory at Le Mans, but also ushered in a golden era that cemented the brand's status as the undisputed leader in endurance racing. The car was prepared by the Porsche Alpenstraße dealership, located south of Salzburg, Austria, and its livery became an instant icon of the World Sportscar Championship. Since then,The “Salzburg Design” is etched in the collective memory of motorsport fans.
Sonderwunsch: Personalization Taken to the Extreme
Decades later, that legacy was revived thanks to the Porsche Sonderwunsch program, the brand's most exclusive department, specializing in restorations, historical reinterpretations, and bespoke commissions. It was there that a collector, Victor Gomez, decided to transform his 2005 Porsche Carrera GT into a modern tribute to the 917 Salzburg.
The process was as thorough as it was meticulous. The vehicle was completely disassembled to begin a comprehensive restoration before the personalization. Every mechanical, structural, and technical component was reviewed and optimized, including the iconic 5.7-liter naturally aspirated V10 engine, capable of delivering 612 horsepower. The goal was not only to create a visually stunning car, but also to ensure its performance lived up to its historical significance. A bold contrast between past and present. Although the 917 and the Carrera GT belong to different eras and philosophies, the Sonderwunsch team managed to unite both worlds with surprising coherence. The exterior of the Carrera GT incorporates extensive matte black carbon fiber elements, providing a modern contrast to the historic paintwork. This finish is visible on the roof, A and B pillars, side mirrors, front air intake, and rear diffuser. The engine grilles were anodized in matte black, while the original five-spoke wheels of the Carrera GT also adopt this dark tone, maintaining the colored Porsche crest as a point of visual balance. The bodywork features a completely hand-applied paint finish in Indian Red and White, topped with the iconic number 23 and protected by a clear film that ensures its durability. An interior that breathes racing. The customization wasn't limited to the exterior. The interior of the Carrera GT received an equally radical and sophisticated treatment. The entire interior was trimmed in Indian Red Alcantara, including the dashboard, door panels, steering wheel, and center console. Even the front trunk and the bespoke luggage set were upholstered in the same material, reinforcing the feeling of absolute exclusivity. Matte black carbon fiber is also present in the interior, visible on the seat shells, air vents, and instrument panel. For the seats, Porsche used FIA-approved black fabric from the Porsche 918 Spyder, a fire-retardant material developed for motorsport that reinforces the direct link between this Carrera GT and the world of racing.
A One-of-a-Kind Porsche
Porsche did not reveal the cost of this transformation, true to the philosophy of discretion surrounding the Sonderwunsch program. What is clear is that it is an exclusive, complex process reserved for clients willing to work hand in hand with factory engineers and designers. Every decision is validated to guarantee safety, quality, and technical fidelity.
The final result is a Porsche Carrera GT that is unique in the world, fully homologated, and laden with symbolism.
