Microsoft announces a new wave of layoffs that could affect more than 2% of its workforce
The new layoffs at the technology company could affect the sales area, consulting and video game division of Xbox
Recently, through a statement, the American multinational technology company Microsoft announced a new wave of layoffs in the coming weeks that could affect at least 2.5% of its workforce for this summer.
According to the latest report from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the company founded in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen employed approximately 228,000 full-time workers worldwide last year; However, this recent cut would mean the layoff of about 5,700 employees.
The recent cuts are part of a restructuring within the company, which is expected to affect both sales and Xbox's consulting and video game division.
However, this is not the first time that the company dedicated to developing, among other things, software, hardware devices, cloud services and artificial intelligence announced waves of layoffs.
In the middle of last year it cut 4% of its workforce, approximately 9,000 employees, which added to the 6,000 layoffs in May; Overall, Microsoft in 2025 eliminated 15,000 jobs.
According to the latest reports, Microsoft shares have fallen close to 19%, also amid readjustments in the technology sector due to spending cuts and the large investment in the development of more artificial intelligence resources.
On the other hand, the video game division is also expected to carry out a round of layoffs. Recently, Asha Sharma, CEO of Xbox, announced a “restart” of operations after several months with low results, so the reduction will not only involve marketing areas, but also studio closures or cancellations of new video game projects.
