NextEra Energy will acquire Dominion after a million-dollar deal due to the increase in electricity demand
The new company that will operate under the name NextEra Energy will offer its services to approximately 10 million customers
This Monday, the American energy company NextEra Energy announced the acquisition of the public services company Dominion Energy for a $67 billion dollar agreement and with this merger will give way to what will be one of the largest regulated electricity companies in the world.
The agreement is also consolidated in the midst of a significant increase in electricity demand due to strong investment in artificial intelligence, the creation of data centers and an inevitable rise in energy costs.
In this regard, John Ketchum, president and CEO of NextEra Energy, said in a statement that "the demand for electricity is increasing at a rate unprecedented in decades. Projects are becoming larger and more complex. Customers need affordable and reliable energy now, not in a few years."
With more than 100 years in the industry, NextEra Energy, Inc. has a generation capacity of approximately 45,900 megawatts, has a workforce of 14,000 employees between the United States and Canada and its revenues reach up to $17 billion, making it on the Fortune 500 list.
While Dominion Energy, with 43 years in the market, has become one of the main suppliers of electricity and natural gas in the US, as well as a leading operator in offshore wind and solar energy.
Therefore, the agreement between both companies, which will operate under the name NextEra Energy and where NextEra shareholders will have 74.5% and Dominion shareholders will own 25.5%, will offer their services to approximately 10 million customers in Florida, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
As part of the merger that is expected to close in mid-to-late 2027, John Ketchum will be president and CEO of the resulting company; Additionally, Dominion customers in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina will receive credits of up to $2.25 billion over two years.
Finally, according to the statement, both companies intend with this agreement to continue satisfying the demand for electricity while remaining affordable for their customers.
