When do classes start in California?
The state's planning guidance sets August 12, 2026 as the reference date for the start of the 2026-2027 school year. However, this day is not mandatory for all districts, since each one can adjust its schedule according to its needs and the decision of its board of education.
According to the planning published by US School Calendar, the school year would end on June 10, 2027, as long as it is not necessary to make up days lost due to weather emergencies, natural disasters or other interruptions. Additionally, all districts must meet the state requirement of offering at least 180 days of instruction.
California is one of the states with the greatest variation in its school calendars. While some schools open their doors at the end of July or during the first days of August, others wait until after the Labor Day holiday, celebrated in September.
