Cochin University Grants Menstrual Leave: For the first time in the country, a university in Kerala has announced Menstrual Leave for its girl students. Actually, Cochin University has decided to give menstrual leave to girl students.
The Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) has taken the decision following representations from the university's student union. In the vacation order issued by the university on January 11, 2023, it has been said that the university has decided to give two percent additional exemption for the shortfall in attendance of girl students in each semester.
Two percent relaxation will be given in compulsory attendance
As per rules, it is mandatory for the students of Cochin University to have 75% attendance in each semester to be eligible to appear in the examination. At the same time, often the girl students avoid going out of the house for the first three days of menstruation ie period time, and in such a situation, they get an additional leave of three days every month.
This results in many more girls falling short of the compulsory attendance rule at the end of the year than boys. Therefore, the University has decided to bring down the compulsory attendance to 73 per cent, giving a relaxation of two per cent to girl students for shortness of attendance including menstrual leave.

Menstrual leave should be made a rule
Dr. Poornima Narayanan, member of the Syndicate at Cochin University, said that the University has given its recommendation on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor and the University Syndicate on a petition made by the students' union. This is a very necessary step taken by the university towards women students and a followable initiative. She said that in future, the academic world will have to think about introducing menstrual leave for teenage girl students.
Maternity leave for girl students in Mahatma Gandhi University
Only last month, the Mahatma Gandhi University in Kerala decided to provide 60 days of maternity leave to degree and post-graduate students during their course. Recently, a petition has also been filed in the Supreme Court demanding compliance of Section 14 of the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961. At the same time, the rule of giving leave for the first three days during menstruation has also been demanded.
