Eduardo Vargas was arrested in Harris County after being linked to fake profiles that shared intimate content of a victim. He faces serious charges
A Hispanic man was arrested in Texas for allegedly impersonating a woman on social networks and publishing intimate images of her without her authorization, in a case which has put the spotlight on the growing phenomenon of digital intimate abuse.
The suspect, Eduardo Vargas, was arrested in Harris County after the victim reported the existence of fake profiles on different platforms.
According to the investigation, Vargas would have created multiple accounts using the woman's name and photographs to distribute intimate photos and videos with the apparent purpose of exposing her publicly.
Digital investigation led to his arrest
The complaint was received by the digital crimes unit of Precinct 4, which after analyzing the online profiles managed to trace the activity to Vargas. Authorities confirmed his alleged involvement in creating the fake profiles and posting the content without the victim's consent.
The Harris County District Attorney's Office filed two serious charges against him: online impersonation and unauthorized dissemination of intimate material. Both charges are considered felonies under Texas criminal law.
The accused was released on bail.
Vargas was arrested and later released on a $30,000 bail, while the judicial process is ongoing. The relationship between the accused and the victim has not been disclosed.
This type of crime, also known as "non-consensual pornography," has been on the rise with the use of social media and messaging apps.
Authorities warn that the dissemination of intimate content without permission not only represents a serious invasion of privacy, but can have devastating psychological and social consequences for the victims.
