American tourist found dead in Tobago and suspect arrested

An American citizen was found dead with apparent stab wounds on the island of Tobago, local authorities reported. The victim was identified as Christopher Brown, 43, a resident of Silverthorne, Colorado. According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service report, Brown was found unconscious around 10:30 pm on Depot Road in the coastal community of Castara, located on the leeward coast of Tobago. He had stab wounds and a metal object lodged in his back. He was pronounced dead at the scene. According to police, Brown had gone out to buy marijuana. Preliminary reconstructions indicate that Brown was having dinner and drinks with friends in Castara before the attack. He informed them that he was stepping out for a moment to buy marijuana and, shortly afterward, was found seriously injured on a nearby road.
Authorities have not detailed whether the motive for the attack is related to this outing nor have they released further information about the exact circumstances of the crime, which remains under investigation.
A suspect is in custody
Trinidad and Tobago Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro confirmed to The Associated Press that a suspect has been detained in connection with the homicide.
Authorities have not released the name or further details of the detainee, as the case remains under active investigation.
Following the incident, Tobago's Division of Tourism, Culture, Antiquities and Transport issued a statement expressing its dismay and sending condolences to the victim's family and friends.
The institution described the murder as “a horrific act of violence” and assured that the island continues to be a safe place for both residents and visitors.
The Division reiterated who works hand in hand with police authorities to support the investigation and reinforce peace in the community of Castara, known for its peaceful and tourist-friendly atmosphere.
