An elementary teacher identified as Mackenzie Naught, 25 years old, was arrested on Sunday by Whitman County authorities at her residence located in St. John, in Washington State, after authorities accused her of having sexual relations with a 16-year-old teenager inside a van.

According to court documents obtained by The Spokesman Review, the case came to light after her husband a teacher, Garrett Naught, reported to the police an alleged sexual relationship between his wife and a 16 year-old teenager.

The man assured that the minor, whose family he has known for a long time, confessed to him what had happened during a call and through messages sent by Snapchat.

Encounter happened inside a van

According to the investigation, the teenager and the teacher exchanged messages during the early morning of May 3 after Garrett fell asleep.

The young man declared to the investigators that the teacher began to behave in a “flirtatious” manner and asked him to go look for her near her home around 2:15 in the early morning.

Subsequently, they both went to Harwood Hill, a nearby rural area, where they talked before kissing and having sexual relations inside the vehicle and also in the back of the van, according to court documents.

The teenager claimed he dropped the teacher off again near his house around 4:00 in the morning.

The teacher admitted the facts, according to the police

Initially, Naught denied the accusations before investigators. However, later confirmed the version given by the adolescent, in accordance with the authorities.

The teacher indicated that she knew the young man from community activities and admitted that she knew he was 16 years old, although she stated that she saw him“as one of her friends.”

The judicial documents also point out that Naught asked the minor not to tell what happened and acknowledged to the police that he knew that what happened “was wrong”.

The teacher worked as a first grade teacher at St John School District since last September.

After the accusations became aware, the school district reported that the teacher was suspended while the criminal and administrative investigation progresses.

Superintendent Tina Strong assured that the district is collaborating fully with authorities and reiterated the institutional commitment to the safety and well-being of students.

Naught appeared in court on Monday and remains in custody with bail set at $10,000 dollars.

The teacher faces a charge for first-degree sexual conduct with a minor.

Although the age of sexual consent in Washington state is 16 years, authorities haven't publicly clarified whether circumstances exist specific astances related to the position of authority of the accused or the exact moment in which the investigated facts would have began.
