Postal worker murdered while delivering mail in North Carolina
After the crime, William Craig Durham, 56, was arrested and faces charges of first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping.
Brandi Reynolds, a 35-year-old United States Postal Service (USPS) worker and mother of two daughters, was murdered while delivering mail in a rural area of the state of North Carolina, authorities reported.
The incident occurred on Friday in Wilkes County and is being investigated jointly by the United States Postal Inspection Service, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) and the local sheriff's office.
Authorities indicated that Reynolds was found dead after being shot while on her usual delivery route.
Man accused of murder and kidnapping arrested
William Craig Durham, 56, was arrested after the crime and faces charges of first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping, according to court records.
According to the indictment, Durham would have held Reynolds “for the purpose of terrorizing her” before causing her death.
So far, investigators have not reported a possible motive or whether there was any prior relationship between the suspect and the victim.
During his first court appearance, the defendant was detained without bail.
Court documents further note that Durham has a relevant criminal history, including prior convictions for second-degree kidnapping and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted person.
A loss that hits the community
Colleagues and residents of the community remembered Reynolds as a person who was close, constant and appreciated by those who received mail on his route.
"She was outgoing, kind and always delivered. We could count on her," said a resident interviewed by local media.
The death occurs months after another family tragedy: her husband, Brent Andrew Reynolds, died in December 2025 in a traffic accident.
According to her obituary, Brandi leaves behind two daughters, who were “the center of her world.”
Authorities indicated that, because the investigation remains open, no further details about the case will be released at this time.
