Five people injured in multiple stabbing inside New York Penn Station
The alleged aggressor, identified by local media as a 51-year-old homeless man, was arrested by authorities.
A man was arrested Sunday night after allegedly carrying out a knife attack at New York's Penn Station, one of the country's main railway hubs, leaving five people injured.
According to police sources cited by ABC News and the New York Post, the incident occurred around 7:00 p.m. at the New Jersey Transit boarding area. The suspect was arrested shortly after by security officers and taken into custody.
Authorities indicated that none of the victims had serious injuries and that all survived the attack.
The victims would be passers-by with no relationship to the aggressor.
According to preliminary information, the five injured are men between the ages of 30 and 60. Investigators believe they were attacked randomly while passing through the station.
Sources consulted by the New York Post identified the suspect as Héctor Deleon, 51, who is allegedly homeless. The outlet also noted that he had previously been arrested in New Jersey on charges related to assault and narcotics.
The exact circumstances of the attack remain under investigation.
Mamdani condemns the incident
The mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, expressed his solidarity with the victims and highlighted the actions of the emergency teams.
“My heart goes out to all the injured, their loved ones and those who were shocked by this unacceptable violence,” he wrote on social media.
The mayor also praised the quick intervention of Amtrak police and emergency services, who managed to control the situation and arrest the suspect.
He also confirmed that the incident did not cause interruptions in the railway service.
Safety concerns at Penn Station
The attack occurred less than 24 hours before a major sporting event at nearby Madison Square Garden, located above Penn Station itself.
Several users consulted by local media expressed concern about security at the terminal, one of the busiest in the United States.
Some travelers pointed out that the increased flow of people due to massive events in the city has increased the perception of insecurity in the area.
Authorities continue to investigate the motive for the attack and have not said whether the suspect will face additional charges.
