He killed his half-brother, dismembered him and hid parts of his body in a freezer: man arrested in Illinois
According to investigators, the main suspect confessed to stabbing his half-brother during an argument and claimed to have acted in self-defense.
Two people were charged in Illinois with concealing a homicide and dismembering a body after authorities found human remains in Lake Mattoon, a discovery that began an investigation that ended with the arrest of the alleged perpetrator and the victim's wife.
Illinois State Police said James Adams, 26, and Robin Turner, 62, face charges of concealment of a homicide and dismemberment of a human body in connection with the death of Dalewayne Turner, 38.
Finding of human remains began the investigation
The case began on June 28, when several people boating on Lake Mattoon observed what appeared to be part of a human arm floating in the water.
Later, investigators located more human remains and were able to identify the victim as Dalewayne Turner thanks to the tattoos on his recovered arm.
Following identification, James Adams and Robin Turner were considered suspects and taken into custody.
According to court documents released this week and obtained by Fox News, Adams admitted to fatally stabbing his half-brother during an argument at the home.
According to case documentation, the defendant maintained that he acted in self-defense.
For her part, Robin Turner told investigators that both men were arguing in the living room of the house when Adams stabbed her husband repeatedly.
Authorities also noted that the woman did not notify police after the homicide.
Prosecutor's Office maintains that they tried to hide the crime
Court documents indicate that, after the death of Dalewayne Turner, both suspects would have taken various actions to conceal the crime.
Among them, researchers mention the use of chlorine to clean the home and eliminate odors, the painting of some areas of the property, the removal and burning of wooden panels and the elimination of carpets.
Robin Turner assured that these works were part of a remodeling carried out between June 21 and 30.
Part of the body was found in a freezer
During a raid this week, agents inspected a freezer located in the basement of the home.
According to authorities, they observed an apparent blood stain coming out of a drainage hole. When they opened the freezer they found a torso, the head and neck of the victim, but no limbs.
The investigation maintains that other body parts were placed in garbage bags, weighted, sealed with duct tape and thrown into Lake Mattoon.
However, one of the bags would have broken, allowing the tattooed arm to emerge to the surface, which led to the discovery of the case.
Investigators later located other bags of human remains in the lake.
The accused will appear in court
James Adams and Robin Turner are scheduled to appear in court for a detention hearing, while the investigation into the case continues.
Dalewayne Turner's family also started a fundraising campaign to cover funeral expenses following his death.
