Dolly Parton will celebrate her 81st birthday with a musical on Broadway
The country music legend announced that “Dolly: A True Original Musical” will begin previews in New York in December of this year
Dolly Parton, the undisputed queen of country music, is preparing to conquer the heart of the Big Apple with the ultimate birthday gift. The iconic artist announced that her long-awaited autobiographical musical, titled “Dolly: A True Original Musical,” will hit Broadway next winter, scheduling its official grand opening night for January 19, 2027, the exact date on which she will celebrate her 81 years of age.
The show, which promises to immerse viewers in the star's life and legacy through his own words and songs, will be presented at New York's historic St. James Theater. Preview screenings will begin much earlier on Monday, December 7, 2026, offering fans a holiday season full of glitter and nostalgia before the big formal debut.
"My whole life has been a musical. A grand opera, actually!" said an emotional Parton in a statement. "We've assembled a wonderful directing, set, costume and choreography team. I've spent a lot of time writing and reworking the material for Broadway, and I can't wait to share it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I've enjoyed living it."
The production is directed by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher and has a book written by Parton herself with Maria S. Schlatter. Although the official cast for Broadway will be announced in the coming weeks, the expectation is total after the successful world premiere that the show had last summer in Nashville under a preliminary version.
General ticket sales for this musical journey through Dolly's humble childhood in the Great Smoky Mountains to her rise to global stardom will begin this Friday, July 10 at 10:00 a.m. ET, with special pre-sales active starting midweek.
For an artist who has redefined entertainment for more than six decades, turning 81 on the stages of the world's most important theater shows that diamonds and sequins never told her entire true story.
