ICE sets record detentions of immigrants with criminal records in the Texas border area
During an operation, in less than 24 hours, 238 immigrants with established criminal records were detained in South Texas
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE), in collaboration with other state and local agencies, announced that it had achieved the largest arrest of immigrants with criminal records in a single day in a border area of Texas.
On June 18, a large group of federal agents proceeded to tour the Rio Grande Valley, an area on the border between Texas and Mexico, where they undertook the search for foreigners lacking legal status who, at the time, ended up being booked by the police, but who inexplicably were later released without taking into account the level of danger that this implies for the rest of their environment.
As a result of this operation, 238 people were detained in less than 24 hours and now it is being analyzed to deport them to their countries of origin as quickly as possible while respecting their human rights.
It turned out that the operation was carried out by the Enforcement and Removal Operations Office (ERO) and focused on Harlingen, an area that includes 14 counties in southern Texas.
Through a statement, Juan Agudelo, director of the local ICE office in Harlingen, highlighted that it is the first time that so many immigrants with police records have been detained, which forces local authorities to redouble their efforts in the crusade established by President Donald Trump to carry out the largest deportation in history.
"ICE's mission continues to focus on improving public safety and restoring the integrity of our immigration system. We will not stop to keep our communities safe by removing one immigrant with a criminal record at a time," part of the letter states.
According to ICE, those arrested included immigrants with criminal records for attempted kidnapping, sexual assault and drug possession.
One of the most dangerous detainees is identified as an alleged member of the “Paisas” gang with a criminal record for assault with bodily injury, possession of controlled substances, possession of marijuana, driving under the influence of alcohol and illegal re-entry into the country.
