Virginia scientist accused of shooting his Japanese wife to death after an argument at their home
Authorities responded to 911 calls Sunday night and found the victim with gunshot wounds inside the family home.
A 64-year-old man was charged with second-degree murder after his wife was found dead with gunshot wounds inside their residence in Fair Oaks, Virginia, authorities said.
The defendant was identified as Leland Jameson, who faces charges of second-degree murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. After his arrest, a judge denied him bail.
According to Fairfax County police, the incident occurred Sunday night at a home located on a quiet cul-de-sac.
Authorities noted that the first 911 call was received at 10:21 p.m. When the operator responded, he was able to hear sounds consistent with a disturbance before communication was interrupted.
Eighteen minutes later, at 10:39 p.m., a second emergency call was received. The police did not report who made it or the content of the communication.
Upon arriving at the home, officers found Chisen Azuma Jameson, 60, lying on the floor with gunshot wounds to her upper body. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Deputy Police Chief Brendan Hooke, the preliminary investigation determined that Leland Jameson allegedly shot his wife, for which he was arrested at the scene.
The investigation continues
Authorities indicated that the investigation is ongoing and asked anyone with information about the case to contact police.
Leland Jameson has worked for more than two decades as director of the National Science Foundation's Computational and Applied Mathematics program, where he evaluated grant applications for universities and research groups. He also frequently participated as a speaker at scientific and government meetings.
For her part, Chisen Azuma Jameson was originally from Osaka, Japan, and had settled in the United States several decades ago. He worked for the Japanese airline All Nippon Airways, a company he represented at the Aviation Users Forum held last November.
The couple was also known as the parents of Leland Jameson Jr., a college football coach. Before starting his coaching career, he played for clubs in the Netherlands and Japan. He later coached the McLean High School team, which he led to the Virginia state final in 2024, and since July of last year he took over as head coach of the Academy of Central Florida, in Orlando.
While investigations continue to clarify the circumstances that led to the shooting, Leland Jameson remains held in the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where he must appear in court in the coming days.
