Mexico offers reward for former Amazon executive suspected of murdering his wife
Juan Carlos García Sánchez is accused of having his ex-wife Abril Pérez Sagaón murdered, who previously denounced him for abuse
The Attorney General's Office of Mexico City announced a reward of 500,000 pesos for anyone who provides truthful and useful information that allows Juan Carlos García Sánchez, former director of Amazon México and identified as the alleged intellectual author of the femicide of his ex-wife, Abril Pérez Sagaón, to be located, detained and placed at the disposal of the authorities.
The reward was published in the Official Gazette of Mexico City, which establishes that it will be delivered to whoever provides information that effectively contributes to the capture of the accused.
Juan Carlos García Sánchez faces accusations of aggravated attempted feminicide, criminal association and feminicide, derived from two investigations opened for the attack against Abril Pérez in January 2019 and for her murder that occurred on November 25 of that same year. Since then he has remained a fugitive from justice.
The case of Abril Pérez became one of the most emblematic in Mexico due to the failures of the justice system.
Months before being murdered, she reported that her then-husband hit her with a baseball bat while she was sleeping and tried to attack her with a cutter in front of one of their children.
Although he was initially arrested for attempted femicide, a judge reclassified the crime and he was later released. Days before a court hearing related to the process, Abril was shot to death while traveling in a vehicle through Mexico City with her children.
Investigations by the capital's Prosecutor's Office maintain that García Sánchez ordered the crime, which is why he has since been considered a fugitive and has a national and international search file.
With the new reward, the Prosecutor's Office seeks to obtain information that will finally allow him to be captured and advance access to justice for the victim and his family.
