Former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum arrested on drug charges
Democrat Andrew Gillum was arrested in Alabama on suspicion of using drugs, because he had marijuana and methamphetamine in his vehicle
According to Baldwin County Sheriff's Office arrest records, Democrat Andrew Gillum, former Florida gubernatorial candidate in the 2018 election, was arrested on drug charges.
On July 2, officers with the Daphne Police Department in Alabama arrested the 46-year-old politician and he faces charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, a Class D felony, and second-degree possession of marijuana, a Class A misdemeanor.
The incident occurred during a traffic stop while driving a vehicle erratically and a search of the vehicle revealed several rolled marijuana cigarettes, as well as three packages containing a substance that tested positive for methamphetamine.
Eight years ago, the former mayor of Tallahassee, Florida, lost the gubernatorial election to Republican Ron DeSantis whose term is expiring.
On that occasion, Gillum was defeated by less than 34,000 votes, the narrowest margin in an election to define a president of the “Sunshine State” since 1916.
Then, in March 2020, Gillum's troubles with the law began to emerge after Miami Beach, Florida, police arrested him when he was found intoxicated using methamphetamines with another man at a South Beach hotel. However, he did not face criminal charges.
In addition, he was the subject of an investigation carried out by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on suspicion of having engaged in corruption while serving as mayor of Tallahassee between 2014 and 2018.
Later, in 2022, along with his advisor Sharon Lettman-Hicks, Gillum had to face a federal grand jury accused of 19 counts of wire fraud and having made false statements.
Despite this, the Democrat managed to get rid of this last charge, but his reputation had already been disrupted, although Jason Coody, former federal prosecutor for the Northern District of Florida, dropped the remaining charges shortly after.
Now it is unknown what the future of Andrew Gillum will be, since the scandals he has been involved in could influence him to be given a severe sanction as an example to demonstrate that in Alabama justice is exercised with an iron fist.
The former mayor was temporarily booked into the Daphne City Jail before being transferred to the Baldwin County Correctional Facility.
