Minor arrested after shooting in Times Square that sparks panic among visitors
The police seek to clarify the motive for the incident and determine the degree of participation of each of those involved.
A minor was arrested this Thursday after a shooting in Times Square, one of the busiest areas in New York, authorities from the New York Police Department (NYPD) reported. The incident caused moments of panic among tourists, workers and passers-by, although no injuries were reported.
The shooting occurred shortly before 4:00 in the afternoon at the intersection of West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue, in the heart of Manhattan. According to the NYPD, officers managed to detain a suspect under the age of 18 and recovered a firearm at the scene. Authorities have not revealed his identity or exact age because he is a minor.
Surveillance videos posted on social media show two individuals running through the area before several explosions were heard. The images show how both apparently pull out firearms and shoot before fleeing.
“We have a suspect in custody and no injuries have been reported,” indicated police sources cited by local media.
The quick response of the agents avoided major consequences in an area that receives thousands of visitors daily and that this Thursday registered a significant influx of people. After the shots were fired, dozens of people ran for safety while officers cordoned off the area to begin investigations.
According to police reports and US media, a bullet hit a nearby vehicle, although it did not hit anyone. Investigators are analyzing security videos and testimonies to determine the origin of the confrontation and establish whether the attack was directed against a specific person or if it was an event derived from a dispute between groups.
Witnesses indicated that they heard at least five explosions, which generated scenes of confusion in one of the country's main tourist centers. “People started running in all directions when they heard the shots,” said a witness quoted by local media.
Authorities also reported that they are looking for other possible people involved in the incident. “The investigation remains active and more arrests are not ruled out,” police sources said.
The shooting occurred just days after another episode of violence in Times Square related to the New York Knicks' championship celebrations, when a 17-year-old boy was shot and wounded and several people were arrested. This history has increased attention on security in one of the most emblematic areas of Manhattan.
