Officer, mother and 13-year-old daughter killed in Ohio shooting
Four officers were also injured during the exchange of gunfire and a dog from the K-9 unit remains in serious condition.
A shooting that occurred Sunday night and continued into the early hours of Monday in Rittman, Ohio, left four people dead, including a police officer, a mother, her 13-year-old daughter and the alleged perpetrator of the attack.
Authorities also reported that four officers were injured by gunfire while responding to the emergency, although two of them have already been discharged after receiving medical attention, Fox10 News reported.
A sergeant with 10 years of service died during the operation
The Rittman Police Department identified the deceased officer as Sergeant Scott Ries, who had 10 years of service at the institution.
According to Wayne County Sheriff Tom Ballinger, the incident began around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, when a 911 call reported gunshots in the vicinity of North Metzger Avenue and Saurer Street.
When the first agents arrived at the scene, they were shot at by the attacker, the official explained.
Four police officers were injured
During the response to the incident, four Medina County Sheriff's Office deputies were struck by gunfire.
In a joint statement from Rittman Police Chief Robert Shows, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and Medina County Sheriff Terry Grice, it was reported that two of the officers remain hospitalized in stable condition, while the other two were treated at the scene and later released.
Mother and daughter also died
Sheriff Ballinger confirmed that the fatalities also included a woman and her 13-year-old daughter.
So far, authorities have not released the identity of the two or offered details about the circumstances under which they died.
The alleged attacker also died during the incident.
Authorities reported that Vick, a dog from the Wayne County Sheriff's Office K-9 unit, was shot during the operation.
The animal remains in serious condition at a veterinary hospital.
After the shooting, numerous law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, including the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, which is participating in the investigation to determine how the attack unfolded.
The Medina County Firefighters Association reported that several emergency teams were mobilized to treat the injured.
So far, authorities have not revealed a possible motive for the shooting and the investigation is ongoing.
