Parents report that a 13-year-old girl took her own life in Michigan after alleged rape at a party
A 13-year-old teenager died by suicide in Michigan weeks after reporting an alleged sexual assault that occurred during a meeting
Parents of a 13-year-old girl from Michigan reported that the minor took her own life weeks after reporting an alleged sexual assault that occurred during a party that took place in February.
The young woman, identified as Mylah Thelen, was found dead in her room on March 29 in the family home located in Portland, Michigan.
According to what her parents, Amy Thelen and Robert Thelen, told Target 8, the teenager confessed to them approximately a month earlier that she had allegedly been raped during a game of “spin the bottle” at a meeting that occurred on February 21.
18-year-old man faces charges
According to family members, the alleged attacker was identified as Blake Kozan, 18 years old.
Court records reviewed by Daily Mail indicate that Kozan was indicted on one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.
The teenager's father stated that his daughter reported that she did not want to participate in the sexual act, but that she did not know how to stop the situation.
After learning what happened, the parents immediately took the minor to a hospital and later to the Montcalm Children's Defense Center, where she was interviewed by specialists.
The family assures that they tried to support her
The parents indicated that they tried to emotionally support their daughter after the complaint and constantly reminded her that what happened was not her fault.
However, they indicated that the teenager was going through a strong emotional impact and that she apparently hid situations of bullying related to the case.
The father also revealed that the minor left a note before she died, although he did not offer details about its content.
According to the family, the night before the tragedy they had shared happy moments and talked about future plans.
Family and friends described Mylah as a creative young woman, passionate about painting, sewing and knitting.
She also practiced Brazilian jiu-jitsu and wrestling since she was little, disciplines she entered after suffering bullying at school.
Her obituary defined her as a “wild child with a big heart,” a lover of family outings and spending time with her loved ones.
Parents ask for changes and greater support for victims
After the tragedy, the teenager's parents assured that they will seek to raise awareness about mental health, bullying and the emotional impact of sexual assault on minors.
They also called to combat the stigma that many victims face when reporting abuse.
The defendant has upcoming court hearings scheduled in June as the case continues to move through Michigan courts.
