An 18-year-old teenager remains in recovery after being seriously injured during an alleged robbery in Toledo, Ohio.
According to authorities and family, Angel Jones was 26 weeks pregnant when she was shot during an organized meeting with a person she and her boyfriend had previously met through Snapchat, reported Daily Mail.
According to the police report, the couple drove to Greenway Avenue when a man dressed in black approached the vehicle and attempted to commit an armed robbery.
Investigators said the suspect pointed a gun at Jones' boyfriend and demanded money.
During the incident, a struggle occurred when the young man tried to push the gun away.
That's when the shot was fired that hit Angel.
The bullet missed the baby, but caused serious spinal cord injury.
The teenager's mother, Brandy Jones, explained that the projectile first hit her daughter's left arm, passed through part of her torso and ended up lodged in her chest.
According to the family story, the shot passed over the baby without hitting him. However, the injury caused severe damage.
Relatives indicated that the projectile fractured a vertebra and caused a significant injury to the spinal cord.
Currently, the young woman remains paralyzed from the waist down.
According to what his mother explained, doctors still cannot determine if he will regain mobility.
The family also indicated that due to the injuries, the teen faces additional physical limitations as the pregnancy continues.
Doctors seek to prolong pregnancy as research continues
According to the family, the impact of the gunshot also triggered premature contractions when the pregnancy was 26 weeks old.
The medical team works to delay delivery and allow the baby to develop as much as possible before birth.
The young woman's mother explained that specialists administer treatments aimed at promoting the baby's lung and neurological development in the face of the possibility of an early birth.
The family noted that the pregnancy remains under constant medical surveillance.
Meanwhile, they continue to evaluate future needs related to accessibility, mobility and home adaptations if Angel's physical condition continues.
Relatives also reported that part of a fundraising campaign seeks to support medical expenses and offer a reward for information that allows identifying the person responsible.
So far, police have reported no arrests in connection with the case.
The family indicated that the teenager's boyfriend has remained with her during the hospitalization while her recovery continues.
