They find possible remains of a man wanted for carrying out a series of shootings in Missouri and Kansas
Oscar Sánchez-Muñoz, 22, is accused of carrying out a series of shootings in Missouri and Kansas that left four injured and one dead
Missouri authorities believe they have found the remains of a man suspected of a shooting that left one dead and several injured, including a child.
Oscar Sánchez-Muñoz, 22, is accused of carrying out a series of shootings in Missouri and Kansas between June 11 and 16, as previously announced by the FBI office in Kansas City.
The shootings began on June 11 in Kansas City, Kansas where a vehicle carrying an adult and a child was hit by a bullet, the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department (KCKPD) reported. Investigators managed to identify Muñoz as the suspect, whose photos they shared in their statement.
On June 16, Muñoz allegedly carried out another series of shootings in Kansas City, Missouri, according to the FBI.
The shootings left four people injured and one dead, Kansas City, Missouri, Police Chief Stacey Graves said at a news conference last week.
One of the injured victims was an Uber driver who was transporting passengers to a World Cup game at Arrowhead Stadium.
After identifying Muñoz as the suspect, police reported that he arrived at his home in Independence, Missouri, which hours later was on fire. Upon entering the burned home, officers were unable to find Muñoz despite an exhaustive search, triggering a search that lasted several days, Graves testified.
He added that the fire is believed to have started inside the house.
On Wednesday, June 24, Kansas City, Missouri, police were contacted by Muñoz's family, who were on the property performing maintenance work after the fire, according to a police statement shared with People magazine.
Relatives were sifting through large piles of debris when they noticed a smell of decomposition.
“They removed some of the debris and moved aside several objects that had been submerged when the fire was put out, and observed what they believed to be a human body,” the police reported.
Based on the description of the deceased's clothing, which matched what Muñoz was wearing on the night of the shooting, the police believe that the remains recovered belong to him, but are awaiting official confirmation from the coroner.
All but one of the victims were stable and out of danger, Graves stated at last week's press conference.
Police have not revealed a possible motive for the shooting.
