West Virginia man accused of killing woman after offering her a job and taking her to live with him
Donald Ray Pennington is charged with second-degree murder and concealment of a corpse
A West Virginia man is charged with murder after allegedly killing a woman he had offered a job to.
Online court records indicate Donald Ray Pennington is charged with second-degree murder and concealment of a corpse. He pleaded not guilty.
Media such as WCYB reported that the murder charges are related to a Bluefield woman, who had not been heard from since mid-April.
The woman was Angel Whitaker, who met Pennington while working at an auto parts store in Bristol, Virginia.
Pennington offered the victim a job as an assistant manager, which led her to move out and live with him. However, Whitaker's family in Virginia stopped hearing from her and she was reported missing.
As reported by WVNS, investigators reviewed Whitaker's Facebook messages and later spoke with someone who claimed the relationship between the two was deteriorating.
Whitaker's sister told police that she had stayed at a hotel to get away from Pennington.
Authorities eventually found Whitaker's body in a wooded area of Bastian, Virginia, less than 20 miles from Bluefield.
Braiden Cross, Whitaker's son, created a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for his mother's funeral expenses.
“My siblings and I are very young and we simply cannot afford the funeral expenses on our own,” she wrote in the campaign description.
