Diego Luna starts the week on Jimmy Kimmel with an emotional speech for the Latino community
The actor debuted as host of the show Jimmy Kimmel Live! and in his opening monologue he made a forceful criticism of the immigration situation in the U.S.
After the success of the second season of the Star Wars series, Andor, the actor Diego Luna has embarked on an adventure in which he explores a new facet of himself: that of host. And throughout this week, he will be hosting the popular late-night show “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, broadcast on ABC and streaming platforms such as Sling TV, Hulu, and Disney+.
The small screen star kicked off this adventure with a long and forceful message in which he referred to the current situation of the immigrant community in the United States due to the policies implemented by the Trump administration.
“With everything that is happening in this country regarding immigration and Donald Trump’s authoritarian policies, it is no small feat for a Mexican to be the host of such an important program,” the famous man began his monologue. “It’s the first time a Mexican has done this. It’s a very important thing. I hope I don’t make a mistake.”
Diego Luna explained that Los Angeles has played a fundamental part in his life, especially during the beginning of his career: “It became a place I visited constantly, not only for my work, but also because I loved it (…) I also met people who are very close to my heart to this day. Great things happened to me here. In fact, my son was born here. Yes, I have an Angeleno son, the only true Mexican-American in the family, and I will always be grateful to Los Angeles for that,” he added.
Visibly affected, the actor lamented the wave of deportations that has separated entire families and used the space to share some of the most moving stories he has heard during his time in Los Angeles: “This place is a powerful example of what is possible, of what can be achieved when we put empathy first.”
Luna strongly criticized the position of the current president, saying: “I have never been able to fully understand how someone like Trump is able to acquire this level of power. I also struggle to understand how their hate speech can take root in a country that has always been welcoming by nature.
This is so unfair, and let me tell you why: the many times this country has had to rebuild itself, immigrants have always been there to help. Earlier this year, when LA burned, immigrant workers risked their lives to stop the flames.”
In an attempt to contribute his own grain of sand, the actor who played 'Cassian Andor' shared the names of organizations that have stood out for their work on behalf of the Latino community during these uncertain times: Public Counsel and Kind: Kids in Need of Defense.
“Thank you for listening. I hope what I've said inspires you to get involved or to look at this from a different perspective, Diego Luna concluded. The evening was marked by the presence of various stars from the Latino community, including his friend and Andor scene partner, actress Adria Arjona. Performer Nezza, who defied Dodgers rules by singing the national anthem in Spanish, and the Gutierrez Brothers were the two musical acts of the evening.
