Will Smith revives the Oscar scandal in a rap: “If you disrespect me, prepare”
After what happened during the Oscars, Will Smith spent time away from the public eye
Will Smith is ready to talk... but this time, he does it through rap. During a session of the program 'Fire in the Booth', the 56-year-old actor and rapper surprised with an improvisational performance where he addressed key moments in his life, including one of the most controversial: the slap he gave Chris Rock during the 2022 Oscars ceremony.
The controversy erupted when, in the middle of the gala's monologue, comedian Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's - Will's wife - shaved head, referencing the movie GI Jane.
What seemed like an innocent joke lit a spark: Will went up on stage and slapped the presenter in front of millions of viewers. Then, from his seat, he shouted: "Keep my wife's name out of your fucking mouth!"
The incident generated a tsunami of reactions. Smith was harshly criticized, offered a public apology, and was ultimately sanctioned by the Academy with a 10-year ban from future ceremonies.
What does Will Smith's rap say?
Now, more than two years later, Will returns to the subject through his music. In his freestyle he says:
"I'm not one to behave maliciously, and I'm too old to be playing childish games. But if you say crazy things on stage and disrespect me, get ready for what's coming."
He also throws out a line that many interpret as a direct jab at Rock: "Jokers give out what they want, but they cry when it's time to get it."
Although the rap doesn't seem like an apology, it does represent a form of personal expression, where Smith takes control of the story and presents his version through art. The slap at the Oscars was, without a doubt, a turning point in his career. And this freestyle, more than a response, seems like a statement.
