Today, Antonio Banderas is an undisputed icon of the entertainment industry. However, behind the star who has conquered film, theater, and television lies a story of hardship and perseverance. The actor recounted how, in his first days in the capital, he walked around looking at the ground hoping to find a stray coin among the cars. His situation was so critical, Banderas said, that he lived in nine different boarding houses during his first year and was evicted from almost all of them for not having enough money to pay the rent. Banderas fondly remembered a young man who worked at the Maria Guerrero Theater cafeteria, who would give him a ham and cheese sandwich and a beer every night, which was sometimes his only food for the day.

Just when discouragement was pushing him to abandon his dreams and return to Malaga, a chance encounter changed his life forever. Leaving a bar, he recognized Alicia Moreno, daughter of the legendary actress Nuria Espert. With the audacity of someone with nothing to lose, he introduced himself and asked for a chance in the theatre.

Banderas wrote down the phone number of some friends on a napkin and, to his surprise, received a call from the National Drama Center the next day. After passing the auditions against figures like Espert herself and Lluis Pasqual, he landed a role in the play *La hija del aire* (The Daughter of the Air). It was precisely at one of those performances that a young Pedro Almodovar saw him act for the first time, beginning one of the most fruitful collaborations in Spanish cinema. “If I hadn't stopped on the stairs that night and gone back home, we wouldn't be talking today.” the actor reflected, emphasizing that the difference between failure and glory often depends on a single moment of courage.
