Bruce Willis's wife reveals how their family dynamics changed at Christmas after his diagnosis
Emma Heming published a letter revealing how Christmas celebrations in her home have changed as a result of the actor's illness
2025 marks the third year since actor Bruce Willis received his official diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia, a condition that has deteriorated his health to such an extent that his lifestyle and that of his loved ones has changed completely. This was confirmed by the actor's wife, Emma Heming, who in a recent letter detailed how his Christmas traditions are celebrated today. The former model took to her personal blog to open her heart and share with the public how difficult, yet rewarding, it has been to adapt the Christmas traditions that once existed in her family, without compromising the actor's well-being. "The holidays don't disappear with a dementia diagnosis. They change. And while that change can hurt, it can also make room for new traditions, for a gentler joy, and for a connection that matters deeply," she explained in her post. For the family of the star of “The Sixth Sense,” especially Emma Heming, it is very important to keep his Christmas spirit alive and maintain the traditions he followed before his diagnosis. "For me, the holidays bring back memories of Bruce being the center of everything. I loved this time of year: the energy, the family time, the traditions. He was the one who made the "The cakes, the one who went out to play in the snow with the children, the constant presence that moved through the house as the day went on. I found comfort in the routine of knowing exactly how the day was going, especially because I'm a creature of habit," she recalled. For this reason, today more than ever they choose to be grateful for the opportunity to continue creating memories with Bruce Willis instead of succumbing to sadness: "Dementia doesn't erase those memories, but it does create a space between the past and the present. And that space can hurt. Grief during the holidays can appear in unexpected ways," the actor's partner emphasized.
It was in February 2023 that Bruce Willis's family released a joint statement outlining the condition that caused the rapid decline in his health, specifically his speech.
“We have a more specific diagnosis:frontotemporal dementia (known as FTD). Unfortunately, the communication challenges are just one symptom of the disease Bruce is facing. While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis,” they explained at the time.
According to specialized health media, people with this condition have suffered some previous complications, such as brain tumors and strokes.
