“Mortal Kombat II” destroys the box office on its first day in theaters
The film has 64% acceptance on Rotten Tomatoes and beats this weekend “The Devil Wears Prada 2”
“Mortal Kombat II” crashed its way to the top of the box office on its opening day. The fantasy film, sequel to the 2021 original, grossed $17 million on Friday, according to Box Office Mojo.
However, not everything was good news for the fourth installment of the franchise based on the popular video game. The Post qualified or the movie as “a migraine of incessant fights and idiotic characters.” While on Rotten Tomatoes it has 64 % acceptance.
In the film, Adeline Rudolph plays Princess Kitana, appearing in armor and holding two fans with blades.
Despite the criticisms, the film managed to surpass “The Devil Wears 2”, which dropped one place to second place, with $9.8 million in sales during its second Friday in theaters. The sequel to the c omedy from 2006, in which Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt —who reportedly earned $12.5 million each for reprising their roles—enjoyed the third-best domestic premier of the year.
In third place was Michael Jackson's biographical movie, “Michael,” which grossed $8.8 million on its third Friday in theaters. The movie made history becoming the second biographical musical film to break the $500 million mark worldwide, after “Bohemian Rhapsody,” according to Screen Rant.
The fourth place was for “Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft – The Tour Live in 3D”, a concert film that includes performances from the singer's tour in 2025, with grossing $4.5 million.
Eilish revealed that the idea came from her co-director, James Cameron, who “wrote an email to my mother because his wife is my friends mother”, according to people magazine. “I already had the complete idea. I said: ‘Why has nobody filmed Billie’s concert in 3D? Can we? Can I?’”
In fifth place was “The Sheep Detectives”, which raised just more 4 million dollars. The Post praised the film, starring Hugh Jackman, calling it “a nice mystery film with animals”.
