12-year-old boy dies from gunshot wound to head after shooting during fight in downtown Nashville
Police arrested a 24-year-old man identified as the alleged perpetrator and recovered the weapon that would have been used.
A 12-year-old boy died after being shot during a fight Sunday night in the theater district of Nashville, Tennessee, authorities said.
The victim was identified as Damarion Morehead, who was shot in the head in the middle of an altercation involving between six and seven people at the intersection of Representative John Lewis Way and Deaderick Street, an area located next to the Tennessee Performing Arts Center.
The minor was taken to a hospital, where his death was later confirmed.
Police arrested the suspect responsible for the shooting
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department reported the arrest of Devin Orr, 24, identified as the alleged perpetrator of the shooting.
According to the preliminary investigation, detectives reviewed recordings of the incident to reconstruct what happened.
In a statement, police said that during the fight Orr allegedly pulled out a firearm that he was carrying in his waistband. At that moment, several of the people involved began to run and shots were fired that hit the minor.
The fight would have started over a dispute related to a woman
According to authorities, the confrontation that led to the shooting began over a dispute involving a woman.
During interrogation, Orr allegedly admitted to hiding the firearm inside a sewer. Later, investigators managed to recover it.
Davidson County court records indicate the suspect is scheduled to appear in court this Wednesday. So far, there is no registered attorney representing him.
