Rosalia apologizes: 'I'm not at peace with what I said about Picasso'
After praising Pablo Picasso and receiving a wave of reactions, the singer used her TikTok to apologize
Rosalia rectified her words and used her TikTok platform to apologize for her recent stance on Pablo Picasso and her ability to separate "the artist from his work."
After the criticism she received, the artist wanted to defend herself and clarify some statements that, she confesses, she is not proud of.
“I've been wanting to make this video for days. I don't feel very comfortable with what happened when I spoke about the Picasso issue. I'm not at peace,” the Catalan singer confessed in the video.
The performer of “Motomami” admitted that her inner circle meant she did not fuel the controversy, but she decided to respond because she wasn't at peace.
The origin of the controversy
It all began during a conversation about art that Rosalia had with the Argentinian writer Mariana Enriquez at an event organized by Spotify. At that time, the singer defended his ability to enjoy an artist's work regardless of their personal life, using the Malaga-born painter as an example. "It has never bothered me to differentiate between the artist and the work. Perhaps, if I had met that man, I wouldn't have liked him so much because of the things I've been told. But who am I to judge?" she said. These statements resonated due to Picasso's controversial profile. According to various publications and testimonies, such as that of his former partner Francoise Gilot, the painter exhibited attitudes that today would be considered gender-based violence. Gilot described him as "very cruel, sadistic, and ruthless" in an interview, and he is alleged to have had relationships with minors, such as Marie-Therese Walter, whom he met when she was 17. After investigating the matter, as the artist indicated, she acknowledged that her lack of knowledge led her to make a mistake. "It's true that I was wrong. Thank you for telling me. I'm going to try to learn more. It's important not to talk about certain topics when you don't have enough knowledge," he said. He continued: “I thought Picasso was a very tremendous man,But I wasn't aware that there were real cases of abuse.” Later, she added:“I want to apologize if there was a lack of sensitivity on my part and a lack of empathy for those women and their testimonies.”
On Feminism
The singer not only addressed the controversy with the painter, but also took the opportunity to address the criticism she has received since the release of her album “LUX” regarding her feminist stance.
“I have nothing but love, respect, and gratitude for feminism,” she asserts, explaining that her silence often stems from a fear of not living up to expectations.
“I feel afraid to call myself certain things because I don't think I'm a good enough representation of it,” she confessed.
She reiterated that for her, her position is clear: “For me, my feminist position is obvious.” The way I live, the way I write, the way I perform, the way I sing, the way I make music, the way I love… is very feminist.”
To conclude, the singer stated: “I'm not making this video for the haters, I'm making it for the people who are always there.”
