Music in mourning. Sam Rivers, bassist, backing vocalist and founding member of the influential nu metal band Limp Bizkit, has died at the age of 48. The group announced the sad news through an emotional statement on their social media.
In a tribute posted on Instagram and signed by his bandmates Fred Durst, John Otto, Wes Borland, and DJ Lethal, the band described Rivers as “our brother, our bandmate, our heartbeat.”
The text praised the musician, stating: “Sam Rivers wasn’t just our bass player; he was pure magic. The pulse of every song, the calm in the chaos, the soul in the sound.”
The tribute continued, recalling Rivers’ essence and talent: “From the first note we played together, Sam brought an unsurpassed light and rhythm. His talent was spontaneous, his presence unforgettable, his heart enormous.” He also called him a “true legend of legends” whose spirit will live on “forever in every beat, every stage, every memory.”

Rivers was one of the fundamental pillars in the formation of Limp Bizkit in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1994. The band, a fusion of hard rock and rap, made its way to worldwide fame in the late 90s. Along with drummer John Otto, Rivers grew up in a musical environment and later met vocalist Fred Durst when they both worked at a Chick-fil-A. The band's classic lineup was completed in 1996.
As a member of this Grammy-nominated three-piece group, Rivers contributed to some of nu metal's most iconic anthems, including “Rollin' (Air Raid Vehicle),” “Take A Look Around,” and the explosive “Break Stuff,” which has amassed nearly 1 billion Spotify streams.
Over the course of their career, Limp Bizkit released six acclaimed studio albums, many of them certified platinum.
Rivers' journey with the band was not without its difficulties. In 2015,He was forced to temporarily leave Limp Bizkit due to liver disease caused by excessive alcohol consumption. After undergoing a successful liver transplant, Rivers rejoined the band three years later, continuing his passion for music until his passing. The band's statement concludes with a touching yet simple goodbye: "We love you, Sam. We'll always have you with us. Rest in peace, brother. Your music never ends."
