The long-awaited sequel to ‘The Social Network’ Arriving in 2026: Synopsis, Cast, and More
The film 'The Social Network' was released in 2010 and Oscar winner Mikey Madison will play Frances Haugen, the former Facebook engineer
Sony Pictures announced that 'The Social Reckoning,' the long-awaited sequel to the acclaimed 'The Social Network' (2010), will hit theaters on October 9, 2026. The film, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, Academy Award winner for his original screenplay for the first installment, will mark his return to the Facebook universe — now Meta — with a narrative that explores the scandals and ethical dilemmas that shook the social network two decades after its founding.
A luxury cast for a true story
The cast of 'The Social Reckoning' brings together some of the most outstanding talents in contemporary film and television. Mikey Madison, recent Oscar winner for her role in 'Anora', will play Frances Haugen, the former Facebook engineer who became a whistleblower after exposing the platform's internal dangers.
Meanwhile, Jeremy Allen White, who won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for his role in 'The Bear', will play Jeff Horwitz, the Wall Street Journal journalist who worked with Haugen to uncover the company's secrets.
The cast is rounded out by Emmy and Grammy nominee Bill Burr and Oscar nominee Jeremy Strong, recognized for his role in 'Succession', who will play the controversial Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg. Strong thus takes on a role that in the first film was masterfully played by Jesse Eisenberg.
One with a critical eye?
Sorkin describes 'The Social Reckoning' as a “companion piece” to 'The Social Network', but with a very different approach.
While the first film portrayed the genesis of Facebook and the legal and personal conflicts behind its creation, this sequel focuses on the real events of 2021, when Haugen handed thousands of internal documents to Horwitz, giving rise to the series of reports known as “The Facebook Files”.
These articles exposed how the social network prioritized growth and engagement over the well-being of its users, especially teenagers, and how its algorithm actively encouraged misinformation and polarizing content, even contributing to acts of political violence in different parts of the world.
Production on 'The Social Reckoning' is slated to begin next month, with Sorkin also serving as a producer alongside Todd Black, Peter Rice and Stuart Besser.
The choice of a release date — October 2026 — pays homage to the first film, which was released in October 2010 and became a critical and commercial phenomenon, grossing $226 million worldwide and earning eight Oscar nominations, including 'Best Picture'.
Sorkin took home the statuette for Best Adapted Screenplay, loosely based on the book 'The Accidental Billionaires' by Ben Mezrich.
The film promises to be, once again, an incisive reflection on power, ethics and the consequences of unbridled technological progress —topics as relevant today as they were back then on Facebook.
