The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by a DIG rank officer to probe six cases of Manipur violence. Officials gave this information on Friday. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during his visit to the northeastern state, had announced a CBI probe into the six FIRs. Five of these focus on the alleged criminal conspiracy and common conspiracy to perpetrate violence in Manipur.
Officials said that acting on a direction from the Center and the state, the CBI has formed the SIT and taken over the investigation of the cases. A 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organized in the hill districts on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. After this, violence broke out in the northeastern state. Nearly 100 people have lost their lives and over 300 have been injured since the ethnic violence broke out a month ago.
Naga people should be consulted: MLA
Meanwhile, Naga legislators from Manipur on Friday said they wanted that the existing arrangement for Naga areas should not be disrupted by any solution being worked out for the conflict-torn state. Autonomous councils exist here. Ten Naga MLAs had arrived here on June 7 after meeting Union Home Minister Shah in Delhi.
Manipur's Water Resources, Relief and Disaster Management Minister Awangbo Newmai said, 'We have not made any demands to the Center but in case of any arrangement (to create new administrative areas in line with Kuki's demands) Naga areas will not be touched Should go because it will create more problems. Addressing reporters at Chumukedima, the minister said he told Shah that the Naga people should be consulted as they are part of the ongoing peace process with the Centre.
He said the government assured the delegation that the Kukis, Meiteis and Nagas, the three major communities in Manipur, would be consulted and a consensus would be sought before arriving at any plan. “The Nagas are peace-loving people and we are against any kind of war. We also do not want our neighbors to be involved in war. As legislators, we are trying our best to bring an understanding between both the communities so that normalcy can be restored in the state. Newmai appreciated Shah for his prompt action to bring the situation in Manipur under control.
