In a significant move towards environmental sustainability, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is undertaking a massive plantation drive along the Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) corridor. Over 2.5 lakh saplings are being planted from Sahibabad to Shatabdi Nagar in Meerut as part of this initiative.

The saplings are being strategically planted in the median between the roads under the corridor, as well as in stations and depots along the route. Notably, half of these saplings are being planted in the median constructed under the viaduct in the 48 km section of the RRTS corridor from Sahibabad to Shatabdi Nagar. The remaining half has been planted in the RRTS Depot at Duhai.

The variety of plants being planted includes Bougainvillea, Ticoma, Plumeria Alba, Allamanda, Mansoea, Jasmine, and Madhumalati, known for their vibrant flowers. This greenery will not only enhance the aesthetics of the RRTS corridor but also contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment.

Moreover, around 70-75 types of plants have been selected for planting at the RRTS Depot in Duhai. These include Ficus Compacta, Juniperus Chinensis, Ficus Panda Ball, Triangular Palm, Silver Yucca, Plumeria (Champa), Kentia Palm, Terminalia Metallica, Golden Bamboo, Drikenia Victoria, Spider Lily, Lantana Depressa, Neem, Gulmohar, Altamash, Kachnar, Ashoka, Kadam, Sheesham, Silver Oak, Teak, Kaner, Ticoma, and Bougavillea, among others.

To ensure the survival and growth of these plants, dedicated teams have been appointed to take care of watering and maintenance. This greenery not only adds to the beauty of the corridor but also helps in mitigating pollution.

NCRTC has been committed to eco-friendly practices throughout the project. From the use of fly ash bricks to effective waste management and extensive use of solar energy, the organization has prioritized low carbon emissions and sustainable development at every stage of construction.
