Today, the Surat court has given its verdict in the case of remarks made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in 2019 regarding the Modi surname. The court has convicted Rahul Gandhi. The court sentenced him to two years in jail. However, he got bail immediately in the case.

Rahul Gandhi posted on Twitter after the sentence was announced.He wrote, "My religion is based on truth and nonviolence. Truth is my God, nonviolence the means to it."

Filer Purnesh Modi has given the statement. He has said that we welcome the decision of the court. He said that this is a judicial process and it is an important decision.

Rahul was facing a criminal defamation case for commenting on the Modi surname. Several senior Congress leaders, including Gujarat Pradesh Congress President Jagdish Thakor, party legislature party leader Amit Chavda, AICC Gujarat in-charge Raghu Sharma and MLAs have been present in Surat since Rahul Gandhi's arrival. 

Rahul Gandhi had said, how come the surname of all thieves is Modi? Regarding this, BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi had filed a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi. His allegation was that Rahul had brought down the dignity of the entire Modi community with his remarks. Rahul, a Lok Sabha member from Wayanad, had made comments related to the matter at a public meeting held in Kolar, Karnataka ahead of the 2019 general elections. How come the surname of all thieves is Modi? 

After hearing the final arguments of both the sides on Friday, the date of March 23 was fixed for pronouncement of the verdict. Rahul appeared in the court thrice during the hearing of the case. In October 2021, Rahul, who reached the court to record his statement, declared himself innocent.
