North Korea says it is equipping its Navy with nuclear weapons
"This is a strategic course of crucial importance because it will allow our country's nuclear force to be kept ready," said Kim Jong-un.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un stated that his country is equipping “the Navy with nuclear weapons,” at an event in which he announced plans to build 10,000-ton warships, state media reported this Wednesday.
“The program to equip the Navy with nuclear weapons continues on its planned course without deviations,” Kim declared Tuesday during the ceremony, the official KCNA agency reported.
Kim made the statement during the launch of the Choe Hyon, one of two 5,000-ton warships he announced last year, in the city of Nampo, KCNA said.
“This is a strategic direction of crucial importance because it will allow our country's nuclear force to be prepared for multifaceted and efficient operations,” he declared.
“The most powerful weapons”
North Korea has said the Choe Hyon ship will be equipped with “the most powerful weapons” possible.
"After Choe Hyon, we will soon commission the destroyer Kang Kong for operations. After that we will launch 10,000-ton strategic warships one after another," Kim anticipated in his speech.
Under this plan, Pyongyang must “build two surface ships of a class higher than the Choe Hyon each year, including 10,000-ton cruisers,” he added.
