The government has identified a total of 5,803 black spots in the National Highway network across the country. Of which Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Karnataka have the largest share of such extremely dangerous routes. This information was given to Parliament on Thursday.
Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, said that based on the data of 2018-2020 received from the states, state/UT wise details of accidents/deaths at these black spots have been given.
National Highways where at least five road accidents have occurred during three years on a stretch of about 500 meters and in which 10 people have died are identified as accident black spots.
According to Gadkari, among all states Tamil Nadu has the highest number of black spots at 748, followed by West Bengal (701) and Telangana (485).
Gadkari further said, “The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has undertaken work on repair and maintenance including measures taken for rectification of black spots mentioned above on the National Highways assigned to NHAI during the last five financial years 2018-19 to 2022-23. Rs 15,702.80 crore has been spent."
Gadkari, replying to a separate question, said that NHAI has recently started the review of 39 tunnels in 26 projects on 14 national highways. Out of which the review of 17 tunnel projects has been completed and the review of five tunnel projects is going to be completed by December.
